The
Australian Solar Cooling Interest Group (ausSCIG) held
another of its highly successful Solar Cooling Crash
Courses at the Australian Technology Park on Tuesday
November 29 as part of the AuSES Solar 2011 Conference
Program. The course was led by Dr. Stephen White
(CSIRO Solar Cooling Research Leader, ausSCIG Chair,
IIR Australia Chair).
The
course was designed as an overview of technical,
economic and bigger picture aspects of solar cooling
for newcomers to the industry. It also provided design
tips and technical case studies for industry
specialists.
Keep an eye on the News section of
the ausSCIG website for the date of the next Solar
Cooling Crash Course in 2012.

networks, equipment suppliers, renewable energy
businesses, consultants and government. The key
themes of the conference included the current status
and state of the art for solar cooling technology,
solar cooling for energy peak demand management,
technology barriers and industry development.
Keynote
speaker Daniel Mugnier (TECSOL, France), noted that
Australia is at the forefront of world developments
with a number of emerging equipment suppliers, a
number of innovative commercial installations and a
growing amount of local design expertise.
The
conference program was busy with excellent
presentations from speakers including:
Daniel Mugnier, TECSOL, France
Ken Guthrie, Sustainability Victoria
Dr. Stephen White, ausSCIG Chair
Ian Cruickshank, Ergon Energy
Simon Witts, WSP Lincolne Scott
Mark Hooper, Echuca Regional Hospital
Axel Braunsberger, Ipswich Hospital Project
Andrew Livingston, ORER
Sarah Clough, ACRE
Dr. Mike Dennis, ANU
Thank
you to all our speakers and attendees for making the
event such a success!

Presentations from ausSCIG's
December 2009 Melbourne conference are now available
on the Members Only Wiki.
The conference was held at Melbourne’s Royal
Australasian College of Surgeons on December 8,
2009.
Speakers included international solar cooling expert
Dr. Sanjeev Jain ('Solar Cooling In India'), Ric
Brazzale ('Market Support Schemes for Renewable
Energy Technologies') and Dr. Paul Kohlenbach
('Solar Cooling News From Europe: Post-Palermo
wrap-up').
The Australian Solar Cooling
Interest Group (ausSCIG) will be holding its second
event for 2009 at Melbourne’s Royal Australasian
College of Surgeons on December 8.
International solar cooling expert Dr. Sanjeev Jain
will deliver the plenary presentation on his
research and the development of the solar cooling
industry in India.
Other speakers include Ric Brazzale, Director of
Green Energy Markets and Dr. Paul Kohlenbach,
Director of Solem Consulting.
Sustainable energy industry expert Ric Brazzale will
address the critical topic of market support schemes
for renewable energy technologies - such as solar
cooling - in particular VEECs, RECs and ESCs.
Dr. Paul Kohlenbach will explain how the economics
of PV vs. Thermal stack up in Australia, and will
also provide a wrap-up of the recent 3rd
International Solar Cooling Conference which was
held in Palermo, Italy.
In addition to the conference program, a Solar
Cooling Crash Course workshop will be held on
December 7 for those seeking an overview of the
technical, economic and bigger picture aspects of
solar cooling. The course will also provide design
tips and technical case studies for industry
specialists.

The Australian Solar Cooling
Interest Group (ausSCIG) will be holding its first
event for 2009 at CSIRO’s Energy Technology
headquarters in Newcastle on May 19.
European solar cooling expert Dr.
Uli Jakob from SolarNext AG will deliver the plenary
presentation on his experiences and the development
of the solar cooling industry in Europe. Other
speakers include Peter Brodribb, Principal
Consultant, Energy Climate & HVAC&R Expert
Group, and Sarah Miller, CSIRO Solar Thermal
Research Project Manager who will give the inside
story on solar cooling technology, research progress
and upcoming solar cooling projects.
Site tours of CSIRO’s solar
cooling test facilities will follow the conference
and will include inspection of the Solar Collector
Field, Climate Controlled Test Facility and brand
new Balanced Ambient Calorimeter Test Facility and
Low Temperature Solar Thermal Collector Field.
In addition to the
conference program, a Solar Cooling Crash Course
workshop will be held on May 18 for people new to
solar cooling, or for those who feel a refresher
would be beneficial.

ausSCIG Submits Comment on MRET
Expansion Legislation
The Australian Solar Cooling
Interest Group (ausSCIG) has made a submission to
the Department of Climate Change as part of the
consultation phase for the Renewable Energy
(Electricity) Amendment Bill 2008.
The submission recommended the
inclusion of solar powered cooling and air
conditioning systems in the Renewable Energy
(Electricity) Act legislation in order to combat
climate change by reducing the significant
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by the
electricity sector in servicing the residential and
commercial building sectors.
The submission represents the
interests of 163,000 people employed in an industry
which generates $16b in direct spending and is
responsible for 7% of Australia’s greenhouse gas
emissions.
All submissions are due to be
published on the Department of Climate Change
website. The ausSCIG submission can now be read in
full on the Members Only ausSCIG wiki.
ASHRAE/AIRAH Issue
Joint Resolution on Climate Change
The American
Society of Heating, Refrigerating and
Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the
Australian Institute of Refrigeration Air
Conditioning and Heating (AIRAH)
have signed a joint resolution on climate change. “I
see this joint statement as an acknowledgement of
the role we affiliated organizations must play to
address the complex challenges we collectively
face,” John Bosci, AIRAH president, said. “AIRAH is
committed to creating awareness and acceptance
through further education and to the promotion of
sustainable building practices and the responsible
development of alternative technologies within the
Australian market.”
Germany's
Ostbayerisches Technologie-Transfer Institut e.V.
